I want to share this perfect day trip from Calgary which I did recently with my bestie. We hit up the Millarville Farmers Market and Spirit Hills Flower Winery, as well as 94 Take the Cake Bakery and Hubtown Brewing Co. in Okotoks. It’s a perfect day away from the city with your bestie, partner, or 18+ family members. (Because it takes in wine and beer tasting, it is not suitable for under 18).

Perfect Day Trip from Calgary –
Millarville Farmers’ Market
First stop of the day is the Millarville Farmers Market. With over 100 vendors and artisans, selling fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, flowers, pottery and so much more, you won’t likely walk away empty handed. They are an Alberta approved Farmers’ Market which means at least 80% of the vendors you find here are from Alberta. Supporting local has become even more important since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and a visit to Millarville Farmers Market is a perfect way to do your part.
The market takes place at the Millarville Race track every Saturday, 9am-2pm from mid-June to mid-October. Dates vary each year so check their website. Admission is by recommended donation of $3 and you are encouraged to bring your own bags for shopping.
Getting there
From Calgary head south down to Highway 22X and go west. At Hwy 22 take a left and go south until you get to Hwy 549, take a left. At 192 St W, take a right. The Millarville Farmers Market will be on your right.

Perfect Day Trip from Calgary –
Spirit Hills Flower Winery
Once you’ve filled your bags with goodies from the Millarville Farmers Market, it’s time to head over to Spirit Hills Winery to meet Hugo and Ilse for a tour and wine tasting.
Be sure to book your tour ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
Spirit Hills Winery makes unique wines produced from mead (honey) and the wildflowers of Alberta. Their wines rival traditional grape wines and have been praised by top sommeliers and chefs, including Eric Beaumard from the 3-star Michelin restaurant, Le Cinq.
Getting there
Get back on Hwy 549. At Hwy 22 go south. Vear right onto Range Rd 32. This gravel road isn’t very well marked but there is a sign pointing to Spirit Hills Flower Winery so keep your eyes open for it. At Township Rd 203B take a right, then at Range Rd 32A take a left. Next is a right on Township Rd 203A, which will turn into Township Rd 203. The road up to Spirit Hills will be on the left side.

Hubtown Brewing Co. & Sweetgrass Deli
Now it’s time to drive over to the town of Okotoks for lunch. In Okotoks’ cute downtown is Sweetgrass Deli and right next door is Hubtown Brewing Co. Sweetgrass has amazing sandwiches and wraps, and Hubtown has great beer. What more can you ask for when you are hungry and thirsty?
We ordered our wraps at Sweetgrass Deli and asked for them to go, as we planned on going to Hubtown Brewing for a nice cold ‘refreshing beverage’ (aka beer!). They even offered to bring it over to us on the patio at Hubtown. Great customer service!
Hubtown Brewing has an amazing outdoor space. They have their regular patio, plus because of the pandemic, what is normally a parking lot in front, has been turned into a giant seating/patio area. We had a few delicious beers and ate our wraps as we basked in the sun and people watched. It was tough to get moving out of those chairs however knowing we were headed to 94 Take the Cake next helped with that.
Getting there
From Spirit Hills, navigate your way back to Highway 22 (it’s pretty obvious) and head north. When you get to Hwy 549 go east. You can’t go west so there is no chance of going the wrong direction here. Hwy 549 goes right into the town of Okotoks and turns into Elizabeth Street, the main drag through downtown.

94 Take the Cake
94 Take the Cake is one of the COOLEST bakeries I’ve been to, and (for me) a big reason for this day trip from Calgary! I’m going to age myself now, but remember A-Ha’s video for Take on Me back in 1985? If you don’t remember, watch the video! Well, a visit to 94 Take the Cake is like stepping into the video. Beware…you won’t be able to stop singing the song for hours!
In addition to how cool it is, they have amazing cookies and pastries, coffee, and WINE! It’s the perfect place for a sweet treat after lunch.
They have a beautiful outdoor space as well but who wants to be outside when you can pretend you are in an A-Ha video inside?!’ LOL!
Getting there
94 Take the Cake 2 blocks, or a 5 minute walk away from Hubtown Brewing. As you walk out of Hubtown, go left on Elizabeth St. Take your 1st right onto Elk Avenue. Go 1 block and take a left on Elma St. 94 Take the Cake will be on the right hand side of the road.
As we were walking back to our car we saw the sweetest little deer hanging out in the front yard of a cute house. Oh, bless him!

Overall
We had an amazing time on our day trip from Calgary. We supported local businesses as we enjoyed wine, beer, food and arts. All in all it was about 6-7 hours including driving time. If you have extra time or want to change it up you could take in Leighton Art Centre or Granary Road however for me, I’m saving them for next time!
Love,
