Staying at the Azuridge Estate Hotel

A few years ago I went to a Christmas Art Show at the Azuridge Estate Hotel and ever since then I’ve been wanting to spend a weekend there. Just look at the pictures. How could you not? Finally, for my birthday (I’m not going to mention the number but it’s a big one!) I booked my husband and I for a night of luxury in their Signature Suite.

Close to Calgary, it’s location makes it an easy and perfect romantic weekend getaway. Set at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the stunning scenery and serenity make it a weekend like no other.

Staying at the Azuridge Estate Hotel

This is not a sponsored post. I paid for my hotel room, meals and activities while staying at the Azuridge Estate Hotel. All opinions are my own, and are just that…opinions. Most photos are my own and photo credits have been given where not.

About the Azuridge Estate Hotel

The Azuridge Estate Hotel is a luxury hotel sitting on 13 acres, just south of the city of Calgary. Originally built as a residence in 1997, it’s Canadian Pacific Railway inspired architecture has won it many awards including the Architect Award 2007 and Masonry Design Award 1998. After a $5 million transformation from private residence to estate hotel, Azuridge opened in to the public in 2012.

The hotel consists of two main buildings, Sapphire Hall which is the main building, and the Emerald Manor which was originally the guest house for the family residence. It’s decor ‘brings the outdoors in’ with rich wooden beams, slate and stone, and earthy tones.

All rooms, including the two main buildings themselves, are named after gems. Even the name of the hotel was inspired by the mineral Azure, known for its blue/green colour.

Between the two main buildings is the unmissable ‘water tower’. Be sure to climb the winding staircase to take in the amazing views from two observation decks.

In front of the two main buildings, are a three story gazebo and beautifully manicured gardens. The gazebo is another perfect spot for 360° views of the Rocky Mountain foothills. With a bar, it’s a great space for enjoying a cocktail or entertaining.

Getting There

Azuridge Estate Hotel is located near the town of Priddis, Alberta, about 50km south west of the city of Calgary. The nearest airport is Calgary International Airport and is about a 50-60 minute drive depending on time of day and traffic.

From the airport, head south on the #2 Highway (also called Deerfoot Trail) and continue all the way to the south end of the city. Take the Hwy #201 (also called Hwy #22X) turnoff, and head west for 36km. When you see the sign for Azuridge Estate Hotel, you will take a left and continue on that road until you arrive at the hotel.

Checking In

You need to check in with the butler, located in Emerald Manor. As you arrive at the property, pull in, keep to the right, and stop under the covered area. Just inside the glass door is the butler’s reception. Check in time is 4pm.

We arrived early and were offered one of their signature cocktails, a Dangerous Diamond, to sip on in the Tiger’s Eye Den while we waited for our room. Timing was perfect; just as we were finishing our cocktail, our room was ready.

The Butlers

YES, you read that correctly. You get a butler when you stay at the Azuridge Estate Hotel. The butlers will become your best friend, providing personalized service and ensuring you have everything you could need or want during your stay. From booking your room, to dinner reservations, they look after everything for you. They will even run a hydrotherapy bath or pack up your bags if you need. All you have to do is pick up your phone and they are there for you.

The Rooms

There are only 13 rooms at Azuridge Hotel, split between Sapphire Hall and Emerald Manor. As I mentioned above, each room is named and decorated after a different gem. With 6 different rooms types to choose from, you won’t be disappointed with whichever you choose. All rooms feature floor to ceiling windows providing for stunning views that allow you to really connect with nature.

Since it was a ‘special’ birthday we decided to indulge ourselves in the Signature Suite, also known as the Rhodochrosite Suite. When the butler showed us to our room and opened the door, I was really caught off guard. I knew from the pictures that it was going to be beautiful but the high ceilings with exposed wood beams and the incredible view from the massive floor to ceiling windows were really amazing.

In the main room was a king size bed, sitting area with sofa and table, entertainment/TV center, as well as large wood French doors leading out to the furnished balcony.

The oversized ensuite was stunning as well with heated slate floors, luxury jacuzzi tub for two with (more) views, a walk in shower with two shower heads, and his and hers sinks.

And let’s not forget about the walk-in closet which was about the size of my bedroom at home!

All the little details in the room really stood out as well, from the crystal water and wine glasses, to a personalized welcome card with a gift – a bracelet of gems.

There are so many amazing services at the Azuridge Estate Hotel, but quite possibly my favorite is the ‘Morning Butler Tray’ which is included with some of the packages they offer.

At night, during their turndown service, a card is left on your bed for you to make your selection of what you would like in the morning and your desired time. Choose from pastries, croissants, coffee, tea and juice, and leave it outside of your door that night. In the morning, at your selected time, the butler brings you this delicious tray of goodness, just enough to keep you going until your breakfast reservation. Now that is service!

Dining

Opal Dining Room is located in Sapphire Hall and is the fine dining restaurant where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served.  Although the open concept kitchen that lets you see the cooks at work, and provides for an intimate and personal feel, the centre of attention is the huge fireplace in the heart of the room.

The service is outstanding, as well as the food. And again, the attention to detail was amazing. In between courses they brought out sorbet on an ice plate etched with ‘Happy Birthday’.

Topaz Bar is a ‘lobby’ bar also located in Sapphire Hall. The focal point here is the massive granite bar which was brought over all the way from Europe especially for the original residence. We enjoyed a few cocktails here before dinner.

Spa & Fitness Centre

The onsite spa at Azuridge is Flourish Spa. They offer massage and body treatments but make sure to plan in advance. We decided at the last minute to try and book a massage. Although they tried to accommodate us, unfortunately the times just didn’t work. I guess we’ll just have to go back!

The fitness centre has cardio and strength equipment, as well as free weights. There are also fitness trainers and yoga instructors, available by appointment only.

Activites

Take some time and walk around the beautiful grounds of the hotel. Or one of the nearby nature trails. Other activities in the area include horseback riding, golf, snow shoeing, tobogganing, ice skating and cross-country skiing. At Christmas time they have a wonderful Christmas market featuring unique arts from local artists.

COVID-19 Protocols

We stayed during the COVID-19 pandemic and I felt completely safe. Before our stay we were assured of their cleaning protocols and regimen. In addition to their regular cleaning and disinfecting, they also use UV light to clean the rooms. Masks are required in any public space inside the buildings, and hand sanitizer is available throughout.

At the time we stayed, the restaurant was open for dining, however only a few weeks later, the provincial government brought in new restrictions so only in room dining is available at the time of writing. If you are staying during the pandemic, make sure you are aware of current restrictions so you are not disappointed.

Overall

Our stay at the Azuridge Estate Hotel is definitely within my top 5. If you are looking for some serious relaxation and pampering, then Azuridge Estate Hotel is the perfect choice for your stay. The property and the service are amongst the best I have experienced. I’m fortunate to live so close as it’s the perfect weekend getaway or staycation. Would you stay here? Stay safe!
